Local Business Spotlight: Swett’s Restaurant

In honor of Black History month, we’ll be highlighting a local black-owned business each week of February.

David Swett proudly behind the counter.

Located at 2725 Clifton Ave, Swett’s has a been a local favorite since 1954. When you enter Swett’s Restaurant, you are transported into an old-school cafeteria style kitchen. The crowd is a mix of neighbors, government officials and a running list of who’s who in Nashville. All different kinds of folks bellied up at the green tables that have been there since it’s inception at the current location. Not only is the vibe nostalgic, so is the food. The menu changes daily and the recipes are never made exactly the same way twice. It also may be the best fried chicken I have ever tasted.

Susie and Walter Swett moved to Nashville in 1920 and started with a small grocery store in 1940, then a small spot serving hamburgers and such. Eventually, buying a building to expand the their food offerings. Their son David eventually took over and while he’s no longer behind the counter- but is still involved. Pillars of the Black Community in Nashville, the Swett Family overcame many obstacles and built a place that their family still owns to this day. Swett’s has kept many generations of Nashville families well fed and will hopefully continue to do so for many more years to come.
